 Neopatriarchy is a contemporary social structure that revives or maintains traditional patriarchal norms within modern contexts. 

 The term was coined by Palestinian-American intellectual Hisham Sharabi in his 1988 work, "Neopatriarchy: A Theory of Distorted Change in Arab Society" 1.

This concept primarily addresses the dynamics of gender and power in societies, where traditional male dominance persists despite modernizing influences.

Neopatriarchy emphasizes the resurgence of patriarchal values that may have been challenged or altered by modernization. This revival often manifests in:

Impact on Social Change 

 Sharabi's analysis suggests that the setbacks experienced in the Arab world regarding social transformation can be attributed to the persistence of these patriarchal structures.

He argues that rather than progressing towards gender equality, many societies are experiencing a distortion of change that reinforces male dominance 2. 

Cultural Context 

 Neopatriarchy is not limited to the Arab world; it can also be observed in various global contexts where traditional gender roles are upheld in the face of modernity. 

This includes the intersection of neoliberal capitalism with patriarchal values, where male dominance is central to societal structures 3. 

Contemporary Relevance

 The concept of neopatriarchy has gained attention in discussions about gender politics, particularly in relation to movements that seek to challenge or redefine traditional gender roles. 

It highlights the ongoing struggles against entrenched patriarchal systems and the need for feminist resistance to promote gender equality in various cultural contexts.
